February 2004 Plumbline

Hello
Brethren! 2004 was off to a good start with our meeting on January
1st, whereby all of your new officers were present along with many other
Brothers. We had decided at last November’s meeting to go ahead with
the January 1st date primarily to avoid seeking Grand Lodge permission to
deviate from our required regular communication.
After consulting
with several Brothers usually involved in the process, I made the decision
not to try to publish my first Plumb Line before the January 1st
meeting. I hope this was not inconvenient to any of you. On
the other hand, your receipt of this Plumb Line should be an indication of
when you should receive further monthly issues this year based on the
deadlines I have set for article submission and the ability of our new
publisher, which was recommended by committee and approved by the Lodge at
our last meeting.
Your officers and several other Brothers attended
the annual 18th Masonic District Training held on January 15th at the
Scottish Rite Center in Greenville. We enjoyed the fine Bar-B-Que
provided by the District and the ensuing fellowship and training.
I
am very pleased with our officer slate this year. They are all fine
men and are looking forward to serving in their various positions.
Additionally, every one of them who has not already received their 3rd
Degree Proficiency Certificate has agreed to participate in a study to
earn it.
Bother Larry Crane, Chairman of our Coaching Committee,
has agreed to arrange such a study and will be announcing dates and times
at our February meeting. In addition to those officers, all other
Brothers, especially our newer ones, who would like to participate, are
heartily encouraged to attend also.
We should have some good
programs this year, and I have determined to build many of them around the
theme, “The Winding Staircase: A Blueprint For Learning”. Specific
programs related to this theme will begin at the April regular
communication, and I will provide further details in the next two Plumb
Line issues.
The program for February will be the annual memorial
service for Brothers who have died in the past year. Brother Charles
Pridmore, who always does an excellent job, will lead the memorial
service.
The program for March will be a demonstration and
discussion of the Masonic Funeral Service. Brothers, this is
extremely important! As Masons in good standing, you are eligible to
request these rites at your own funeral. Additionally, you are
encouraged to participate in these rites for your deceased Brothers.
Brother Malcolm Carmichael, who is our new Lodge Chaplain, is presently
establishing and training a couple of teams for this solemn duty and will
use them to lead the demonstration and discussion.
I look forward
to seeing you at our February meeting!
Sincerely, W. Kirby

Greetings from the West –
Let us
meet upon the level
Brethren, It is indeed a pleasure to
offer you a message from the West as we begin our new year. First of
all, let me thank you for electing me as your Senior Warden. I am
appreciative of this honor and will serve you to the best of my ability.
For those who have access to the internet, please visit your
Walden Lodge No. 274 web page, http://www.geocities.com/walden274.
We will attempt to make this page as meaningful as possible for you.
Your feedback as to any changes or additions to better serve you will be
most appreciated. Photos of lodge activities will be added to the
website, as they become available. If you have appropriate photos,
please get them to me. What photos have been posted? Perhaps
you didn’t make it to the Children’s Christmas party. Let me just
say that the “big children” had a great time also. Did you miss the
January meeting (on New Year’s Day)? There’s even a photo of those
who enjoyed the wonderful meal prior to our communication. “Mug
shots” of the current officers have been posted as well. Visit your
lodge website regularly for news and announcements.
If you
haven’t been to a meeting in a while, you are encouraged to attend and
fellowship with your brothers. You are missed. Do you need
transportation? Give one of the officers or committee members a
call. Telephone numbers are included in each and every
Plumbline. It would be a blessed sight to see more members in
attendance.
As your Senior Warden and brother, I am open for
suggestions and look forward to your comments and recommendations.
Feel free to contact me by telephone, e-mail, or in person. My
brothers, I am here to serve you and to see that none go away dissatisfied. Well, that’s a mighty tall order. Let’s
work together in the best interest of Freemasonry and our lodge in
particular.
“What we
have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others
and the world remains and is immortal.” Albert
Pike
Fraternally and
sincerely,

Greetings
Brethren. I hope all of you are enjoying the beginnings of a new
year. I enjoyed seeing those of you who made it to our January
meeting, and missed those of you who didn’t. We had a wonderful
dinner prepared by WB Jay Grady of salmon stew, and he did an excellent
job. It was enjoyed by all, and a hearty thanks to him for his
work.
This month’s menu will be: BBQ chicken breast
sandwiches Baked beans Soup Desert Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite,
Coffee
I have spoken to a number of you and understand that you
would like to see the lodge do a covered dish supper. I think this
is an excellent idea and will begin to organize it for our April
meeting. I will provide a sign-up list at the next two meetings, so
we will know what is coming, and don’t end up with 12 macaroni and cheese
casseroles. Just kidding! It is my pleasure serving you in the
South this year. If you have any suggestions on how I can do a
better job, please let me know.
Sincerely, and
Fraternally,
Chris Grantham, JW |
