March 2005 Plumbline, Walden Lodge No. 274
Brethren: The EA degree came off well at our February business meeting as Brother JW Chick Davis sat in the East. Several on the degree team were doing parts for the first time and they did an excellent job. Congratulations to the entire degree team! We were fortunate once again to enjoy RW Brother Dennis Julian’s lecture. Assuming all goes well, the date for the 2nd degree will be the normal third Thursday of the month (March 17th) at 7:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. A Master Mason breakfast degree is being planned for Saturday, April 23rd at 9:00 am. Breakfast will be served at 8:00 am. These times are subject to change and will be finalized and announced in the April Plumbline. We didn’t win the attendance award at the January District Instructional meeting; however, we did have a really good turnout and I sincerely thank each of you who were able to be there. Mark you calendar for the 18th Masonic District Multi-Lodge Degree on Saturday, March 12th. The degrees will be held at the Greenville Scottish Rite on Cleveland St. I am continuing to look for opportunities for our lodge to serve our community in some specific way. If you have ideas along these lines, please call or write to me or any of the officers as we continue to work for you. Last month I asked for volunteers who could be called upon on short notice to attend Masonic Funerals. This is a very important responsibility and to have good support in this area is vital. The 18th Masonic District is creating such a list from all lodges in the district. When the need arises, the lodges in the District will then be notified and those able to attend will do so. The 11th Masonic District has been doing this for some time and they are having great response. As I understand, the 11th District has a list of nearly 100 brethren and attendance has been in the range of 45-75 Master Masons for funeral services in their District. What wonderful support that would be! If you are willing to have your name on this list, even though you may not be able to attend all funerals, it would be most helpful. Contact any of the officers and they will forward the names to Earl Hudgens, Malcolm Carmichael, or me. Please don’t forget to visit Walden Lodge #274 on the internet. Greetings Brothers, I am writing this part to The Plumb Line from Ft Worth, Texas. Isn’t technology wonderful? What would we do without the Internet, cell phones, and instant messaging? I have been asked by our Worshipful Master to prepare a short lecture on the lodge system of Masonic education. I will do my best to be prepared to present it at our next regular communication in March. I’d also like to update you on our plans for a second degree. As you may recall from my last note to you, we had planned on having our candidates receive the second degree at the combined 18th Masonic District degree. However, as Cooper Lodge had committed their candidates prior to ours, we have decided to hold the candidates and perform the degree. We will be holding the second degree on our normal degree night, the third Thursday in March. Please mark your calendars accordingly. I will be announcing practice dates at our meeting in March. I look forward to doing my best to put on a degree for the candidates that live up to Walden’s high standard. I hope this finds you and your family in good health. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there’s anything I can do for you. Sincerely, and fraternally Chris Grantham Junior Warden
