May 2005 Plumbline, Walden Lodge No. 274

   Greetings from the East

Brethren:

It was a pleasure to see such good attendance at our April communication.  For those of you who attended, I thank you.  For those who were unable to attend, we missed you.  My brothers, we had a great evening.   Brother Junior Warden, Chick Davis, took care of the refreshment in his usual very fine manner.  The meeting went well as we conducted business and at the same time shared some good humor.  Friendship, morality, and brotherly love.  Those words still ring true and hopefully we will continue to remember the lessons learned as we seek to work together for the good of masonry and Walden Lodge in particular.  My brothers, let’s continue to build our attendance as we grow in masonry.

Of course, by the time you read this, we will have had our first Saturday degree in quite a while.  Our two new master masons will have the same opportunities that we all have had.  I wonder what they will do with their opportunity.  Of course, we should look at ourselves and all of those who have traveled this path before us.  Have we encouraged our brothers, especially when they might have been in the trough of the wave rather than on the crest?  Have we called or visited those who might have lost their way?  What about those who are ill, the widows, the orphans?  Many times we just get too busy, myself included, and don’t pay attention to those who are in need and those who are hurting in one way or another.  I read a story recently and about the passing of a good man.  The moral of the story was that the “time spent” with a person is the very best gift of all.  Your time.  My time.  There’s not much cost but oh, what a reward.  We may never know the value of the time we spend with a loved one, a destitute person, a person who needs to be lifted up.  Yes, we’ll have raised two new master masons this month.  The potential is great, as it is each and every day for you and me.  God, let your light shine through each one of us and let us not forget that it is not for us, no not for us, but to Thy name give the glory.  Yes, those words, Friendship, Morality, and Brotherly Love.  Those words have been around a long time.

It was a pleasure to present Brother Bob Oney with his forty (40) year award.  Brother Oney has been a member of Walden for a relatively short period of time, but being the Mason at heart that he is, it is always a pleasure to be in his presence.

Brother Bob Stewart was again with us, all the way from Scotland.  Bob has visited us each time he travels to the USA to be with his family in Greenville.  Brother Stewart has such a wealth of knowledge and it is our treat to welcome him to Walden Lodge.

We were saddened by the passing of Bro. Carl Miller.  Please see Bro. Chris Grantham’s article in this Plumbline for his appropriate comments.  Bro. Carl’s presence will be missed, but it is comforting to know that he is in a better place.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the fine work that Brother Senior Warden, Chris Grantham, and the degree team did for the FC degree in March.  Congratulations must also go to Worshipful Brother Mark Cooper, Director of Work, for his continuing diligence and patience, as we strive to uphold the standards set years ago.

Assuming that we go dark, as usual, during July and August, we will only have two more meetings before we start back in the fall.  We have several activities planned for the fall, including the Rusty Nail!  Stay tuned and if at all possible, attend the May meeting.  Go ahead before you do anything else …. mark your calendar for May 5th and invite a brother.

Please don’t forget to visit Walden Lodge #274 on the internet.  Our website can be found at:  http://www.mastermason.com/walden274

   Tidings from the West

Greetings Brothers,

The hard work and practice of your degree team paid off!  We had an excellent degree in March.  My thanks, once again to WB Mark Cooper, and Brothers Chick Davis, and Tom Mowbray, in particular and to the rest of the team for their fine help in putting on an outstanding Fellow Craft degree.

I have just returned from the funeral service for Brother Carl Miller.  It is sad to see such a fine brother pass on to his final reward. Although I only knew him from the lodge, I was always glad to see his warm smile, and hear his kind words whenever we met.  I hope once again to hear those words when it is my time to sit in that Celestial Lodge above.

By our next regular communication, several things will have transpired.  We will have two new members of our lodge.  They are scheduled for the Third Degree on the 23rd of April.  We will also have had the annual communication of the Grand Lodge in Charleston, SC.

During our April communication, RW Brother Dennis Julian gave a short lecture on the Lodge system of Masonic education.  It was a very informative, and interesting lecture.  Those who weren’t able to attend missed a wonderful meeting.

In closing, I would like to remind you that your lodge needs your support.  If you need assistance coming to the lodge, please contact one of the officers listed in the Plumb Line.  We all will gladly assist you in any way we can.  We’d love to see you!

Sincerely, and fraternally

Chris Grantham

Senior Warden
