June 2007 Plumbline, Walden Lodge No. 274
My Brothers, As Walden Lodge prepares to dim its light for the months of July and August, we must endeavor to keep our personal Masonic Light as bright as ever. Do good works in your neighborhoods and towns. Spread the word of Masonry, and be ever watchful for a good candidate to carry on our traditions and spread our word in the future. If you know of a good candidate, don’t keep it a secret. Contact any of the officers listed here. Speaking of which, we will have had a second degree by the time you read this. We are planning a third degree for the 21st of June. Please give thought to attending, we would very much like to see some faces that might not have been to Lodge in awhile. I will leave you with some interesting information from 60 years ago. “The year was 1947. In America, the victorious veterans were returning to their families having won the Great War. Most Worshipful Harry S. Truman was President. The Marshall Plan was proposed to help Europe recover from the war. India and Pakistan were given their independence by Great Britain. The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered at Qumran. Holy Cross defeated Oklahoma 58-47 to win the NCAA Basketball Championship while Notre Dame went undefeated to win the football championship. The Yankees defeated the Dodgers to win the World Series 4-3. The Philadelphia Warriors defeated the Chicago Stags to win the NBA title. A new car cost $1,500. Gas was $.23 per gallon. A house cost $13,000. Bread was $.12 a loaf. A stamp cost $.03. The average salary was $3,500 and the minimum wage was $.40 an hour.” Sincerely and fraternally, Chick Davis Worshipful Master
June has a couple of days that need to be remembered. Flag Day is June 14th. If you don’t have a Flag, be sure to find one to hang outside your home on that day. If possible try to find one made in the USA. June 17th is Father’s Day. Take this time to honor your earthly father. If, like many Masons, he is the one responsible for getting you interested in Masonry, invite him to the June meeting. If your father is no longer here, let those who have been an inspiration or guidance for you know how important they have been. I also need your help. Next year will be Walden Lodge’s Centennial. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to celebrate this occasion, please let me know. Tom Mowbray Jr. Warden
